Dioscorea elephantipes (Testudinaria elephantipes), commonly known as Hottentot Bread or Elephant’s Foot. A nice caudex type plant that forms a wooden bulb over time. These plants can get extremely old and the wooden bulb can reach diameters of almost 1 meter.
The plant grows fine in regular Succulent soil. Plant the bulb 0,5 – 1 cm deep in the soil. Give it some shade (we grow these on the lower shelves in the greenhouse). It needs good watering when the plant is actively growing and showing leaves. This is usually in spring and autumn. Reduce waterings when the plant has dropped her leaves. Dioscorea elephantipes tends to drop her leaves in the dry hot summer months and in winter. Do not worry if the leaf stem breaks. It can form a new one.

Ordered two and received four healthy plants! And bigger than described – all of them at least 2cm, and one surely 3cm.
It took them quite a while to get established, but I’m also a newbie when it comes to codex plants… Now they are happily growing, developing new vines and plumping up that codex. 🙂

I received 2 rooted bulbs, in perfect conditions, one of them had a vine but it dried out during the shipping! Not too bad as, after some acclimatization, they are now all starting to grow new vines! I find them a bit tricky to handle, with the dormant stage, but they are SO worthy

Super happy with my Dioscoreas and the service! They’re dormant at the moment, so I can’t wait to start seeing those beautiful vines start growing.

I ordered 2 plants and received 2 gorgeous plantlets and 3 smaller “bulbs”. The leaves dried during transport but they should give new ones in a few days. Awesome!

Super, drie ontvangen in goede staat. Blij mee!

Bulbs were fresh and well-packed. They took a few days to acclimatise to their new surroundings, but now they’re very happy!
